As a commercial photographer in Charlotte NC, Matt and I often work with a variety of businesses and brands across the metro area, including those from South Carolina. Recently, we had a unique opportunity to collaborate with the Ft. Mill, South Carolina Police Department. It was SO much fun!

The purpose of this commercial photography shoot was multi-layered. The police department was redesigning their website, which required new and engaging photos. They also needed fresh visuals like a new banner photo for their Facebook page which has thousands of followers from the local community. Additionally, the department had recently moved to a new building and wanted to highlight the new signage outside of the station. The images would also help aid in recruitment efforts, serving as vital elements for brochures and pamphlets aimed at attracting future officers.
Key features we focused on during the shoot were highlighting females in law enforcement and taking mostly candid photos instead of a lot of posed photos.
The SWAT Team
Our day began with the SWAT team, providing a thrilling start to the shoot. We photographed officers in action as they surveyed an empty building and executed mock entries through closed hallways and doorways.
Working with the SWAT team was such a highlight. Their professionalism and enthusiasm allowed us to capture impactful shots that exemplified their commitment to protecting the community. For example, we took a dynamic shot of two officers swiftly busting through a doorway, which truly showcased their teamwork and training.
They worked so well together and had amazing energy and camaraderie. These were our favorite shots from the day!
Photos Highlighting Females in Law Enforcement
Next, we moved to the exterior of the new police station. Here, we focused on capturing officers interacting with each other. It was crucial for us to highlight the diversity within the department, especially showcasing female officers in law enforcement—a specific goal for this project.
The atmosphere was warm and professional, which allowed us to take genuine photos of connection and teamwork. We captured moments such as an officer mentoring junior colleagues and other officers smiling and exchanging friendly banter, which reinforced the supportive environment within the department.
We also got some shots of an officer working a drone.
The Importance of Candid Photos
A significant aspect of our shoot was the emphasis on authentic candid photos. The Ft. Mill Police Department requested images that depicted officers in action—engaging, working, and interacting rather than the standard posed photos. We did include a few posed shots, but the vast majority of our gallery consisted of candid, in-the-moment images.
Candid photography tells a deeper story. It reflects the realities of daily life for officers, giving the community an authentic perspective into their work.
Including Forensics Lab + 911 Call Center In The Shoot
In addition to the police officers, we also photographed a forensics lab and the 911 call center. These are important roles within in the police department.
We captured the forensics lab technician dusting for finger prints, analyzing and photographing glasses left at a crime scene, and putting evidence in a sealed bag that will be sent off to the police crime lab.
The 911 call center was really neat. We photographed them communicating with callers during an emergency, inputting data on their computer screens, sending information to the police on duty, and interacting with a fellow colleague.
Our shoot with the Ft. Mill Police Department was a memorable experience that highlights the vital role of community service and law enforcement. As commercial photographers in Charlotte, we are thankful for opportunities to work with our local heroes.
