Family Portrait Photographers in Belmont, NC

This past fall, I hosted family mini sessions in the heart of Downtown Belmont, NC, and it was such a joy getting to photograph so many wonderful families here in a really beautiful and urban outdoor setting.

I had several time slots available throughout the day, and each session gave me the chance to explore different pockets of Belmont’s charming downtown with my clients including the fountains at Stowe Park, the cobblestone staircase, and the downtown area. Everything is literally within feet of each other so I can get a lot of variety in a short amount of time.

One of my favorite sessions was with The Dickson family: a husband, wife, and their two older sons. I love photographing older kids as it's great for diversifying my portfolio and for sharpening my skills working with different age groups - photographing older kids and toddlers are two completely different things! Their connection among the family, their ease in front of the camera, and the way they interacted with each other made the entire session feel fun and effortless. The images turned out absolutely beautiful. The downtown photos are my favorite!

Tips For Older Kids At Your Family Photo Session

Keep the mood light

If your older kiddo brings a phone or tablet to the session, it’s usually best to leave it in the car—once it’s in their pocket, it somehow becomes the star of the show! Letting them help pick out their outfit is a great idea too. When they feel good in what they’re wearing, it’s so much easier for them to loosen up and have fun. We’ll definitely grab some posed shots, but I also love capturing your real family dynamic. Don’t be afraid to joke around, tickle them, or just be silly together.
