If you are searching for a beautiful location to capture fall or spring family photos or to just enjoy a day out with your loved ones, look no further than Freedom Park in Charlotte, NC. It's seriously one of the prettiest spots in the Queen City!
Freedom Park is located between the historic Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods (just a few miles from Uptown) and is a perfect escape from the busy city life. As a Charlotte family photographer, I have had the pleasure of shooting lots of family photo sessions here, each with its own unique charm.
The Beauty of Freedom Park in Charlotte
Freedom Park is definitely at the top of my list of the most scenic locations for family portrait photography in the area. Walking paths, open green lawns, and flower gardens make Freedom Park a peaceful place to play, exercise, or relax.
Among the most stunning spots within the park is the large lake situated at its center. It's truly beautiful! A flat walking trail wraps around the lake completely. At one end of the lake there's a small amphitheater and a stone bridge - perfect for photos! I often spot ducks, geese, and turtles in the lake, along with various birds such as hawks, herons, and songbirds. Weeping willow trees scatter the banks.
Near the swings and playground area, there's a nicely sized small stream that kids enjoy exploring. I often spot ducks there as well. My sons favorite attraction of all is the huge retired black steam engine locomotive at the playground. It's a fan favorite.
There's no charge to enter the park, and there are plenty of parking spaces available. I suggest parking close to the large playground area, as it offers the most extensive parking lot.
Spring Family Photo Session at Freedom Park in Charlotte NC
As a family photographer, my experiences at Freedom Park have been great. Over the years, I have had a bunch of family sessions here, each showcasing the park’s unique charm. The variety in scenery means I never run out of beautiful backdrops. And even though it's a busy park, I can always find great spots away from large amounts of people. For example, one of my favorite places to shoot is the charming stone bridge as it creates an enchanting background for family portraits.
Seasons also plays a huge role in the park’s beauty. In the fall, the area comes alive with brilliant autumn colors: rich oranges, deep reds, and bright yellows, making every photograph pop.
One recent shoot we did at Freedom Park was with the Wagner family. They are the sweetest people! We shot in the morning right after sunrise. Early morning shoots are great because the park isn't busy and it's nice and cool outside, which is great for the kids and also for keeping your hair and makeup looking fresh.
They wanted some fun and relaxed Spring family photos to share with their family members. We schedule the session right at the start of Spring. I wasn't sure if there would be a lot in bloom by that date, but when I arrived I was pleasantly surprised by a stunning red-leafed tree right at the stone bridge. In addition, the striking white blossoms of the Bradford pear trees added a beautiful touch in some of the portraits as well.
I am thrilled with how the photos came out. My favorite shots are of the sisters together. It can be challenging to get older kids to smile and engage, but I always use my tricks and funny sayings, and eventually, the kids enjoy it so much they don’t want it to stop. Occasionally, I even receive an unexpected hug which I did with this shoot. I LOVE being a photographer and giving my clients a great experience and photos that they cherish.
